New to Board; Hope this is proper section for request. I need insight and assistance to resolve having my CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives not responding within timeout periods and then disappearing from the system.

My apologies for the length but am unsure of specific diagnostic data needed for trouble shooting responses.

Disappearing Drives (sometimes hours after startup; sometimes minutes after; Reboot resets drives; Reads previously burned CD-RW info OK):

Internal: LITE-ON LTR-24102B Firmware:5S54 Driver:cdrom.sys (5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)

Internal: LITEON_DVD-ROM_LTD163 Firmware:GH5E
Driver: cdrom.sys (5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)

When Intel Application Accelerator is installed, Event Viewer shows Idechndr is not responding within timeout and the error cycles every 5 seconds slowing system response until it shows both the devices (CD-RW and DVD) disappearing from system.

Tried using Intel Accelerator to slow the drive speeds down to PIO w/o success. Intel shows the CD-RW as Master on Secondary IDE Channel and DVD as Slave. Hard Drive is shown as Master on Primary and Empty on Primary Slave.

Uninstalled Intel Accelerator and now the event viewer shows error of Device\Ide\IdePort1 and then IdePort0 failing to respond within timeout and they disappear from system.

Have disabled imapi but have noticed that Event Viewer shows sending a start Imapi CD-Burning COM signal, then it show Imapi starting then stopping just before each Error of either Idechndr or atapi Error starting up

Solution Found

I posted the same problem and info on dvdrbase.com's board at 15:18 and had the following response from one their board's administrators by 9:42 the next morning which correctly identified the issue and corrected the problem:

The Intel busmaster driver seems still to be present :

XP has the bad habit to reinstall WQHL drivers that are present in it's windows/system32 after an uninstall and reboot procedure.
Instead of uninstalling the busmater driver,go to device manager,choose for "update driver" and choose yourself the driver you want to install from the "compatible hardware "list(best is to choose for the native windows XP busmaster drivers) ,install and reboot......

I followed his astute advice and was able to solve the issues by changing the Intel Bus Controller to the standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller. I was able to access, use and eventually flash both drives with their up to date Firmware. Smart Burn showed the CD-RW would only burn at a max of 4X.

Of course, I reinstalled Intel's IAA and used it to change the two drives back to the UDMA-2 settings. Smart Burn then showed the CD-RW as being back up to its rated 24X burn. I then checked the Device Manager and found that IAA had changed the bus controller and drivers back

Hopefully, the drives updated firmware will address this IAA bug of dropping the drives. If not,I'll uninstall and live without Intel's IAA...

Many thanks to DVDRBASE.COM and Kahuna KUDOS to roadworker - administrator

I highly suggest joining and posting on both boards when attempting to obtain guidance/advice/possible solutions.

Unfortunately, my system is back to the Event Errors of saying the Device/ide/ideport1 did not respond within the time out period and after a few minutes of multiple Event Errors, both the CD-RW and DVD drive went bye-bye on their own.

I've checked and the configuration still is showing Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller with drivers of atapi.sy/pciidex.sy (both 5.1.2600.1106 {Xpsp1.020828-1920} and pciide.sys -- 5.1.2600.0 {Xp Client 010817-1148}

Primary and Secondary Channels show same drivers -- atapi.sys & storprop.dll -- both with 5.1.2600.1106 {Xpsp1.020828-1920}

Rebooted and drives were back in system but within 5 minutes, the Event Viewer shows the atapi Error of Device/ide/ideport1 did not respond within the time out period

No IAA -- wiped off; only updates were for Nvidia video card. (7/28/03 version 6.14.10.4523)

I'm beginning to wonder what else is bugging... bad drivers?

roadworker suggested I try disconnecting the drives physically from the system to possibly isolate issues which is my next plan of ATTACK...

Any insight would, as before, be greatly appreciated...

Update-Apparent Solution

Just an update that have had apparent success by swapping the drive locations to facilitate connecting the CD-RW at the end of the 40-pin/80-conductor cable as jumpered Master and the DVD-ROM at mid-cable as jumpered Slave. 72 hours and no timeout errors...
