all my CD rom drives suddenly dissappeared

I was working on a video editing program when it crashed and I noiced either of my two cd rom drives appeared anywhere anymore except in Device Manger where they both had been working fine for the last 6 months. One is an internal CD-RW and the other is an external USB DVD burner. I tred uninstalling both and restarting with no change. Also tried updating drivers. I had another PC that had it's CD burner "disappear' but the external Sony DVD drive worked fine with that. I tried running an online diag at http:/pcpitstop.com and it said both devices were disables with "a code 39 problem". I don't get the feeling this is an Atapi problem but...what do I know. Thanks

Thank you everybody that replied. Problem is now fixed. It was the upper lower filters. Went into regedit and delelted them and now works fine. Oh, and as for the last reply, I think it was an "inside job". Have reported the loss to John Ashcroft. Thanks

There are 2 reg keys that screw the device, I removed them both and re-scaned for PnP (or rebooted) after removing the device & all was well. The keys are: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters". You need to use Regit (start>run>regedit). On different operating systems they can be located at slightly different spots so if you can't find "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" at the above spot do a registry search for them. Also DO A REGISTRY BACKUP first especially if your not used to registry editing. There are web sites that address this issue on the internet but hard to find.

Hi I've tried the suggestion below but no luck, I found a number of upperfilter and lowerfilters values in other registry keys using the search but in this particular registry below there was only an upperfilters value. I also tried the patch suggested elsewhere in this message but no joy. Problem seemed to start when I installed a card reader and USB hub, all card reader drives are recognised but not CD/DVD

It also happens in win2k, both my cd-rw and dvd-rw uninstall themselves at random intervals. Sometimes straight after startup. problem persists for a short while then vanishes, used that .vbs fix and hopefully it won't happen again.

I have a problem where I have a LG 4040B (as per lable on drive) but when I install and bootup the machine Windows initialises this as being a LG 4082B. It also does not recognise my drive as being a DVD burnner. I have got an CD burner as well which I have as the Slave and the LG is the Master. Any body help?

Try re-booting 6 to 10 times. They will return. I think this is a problem picked up on the internet, but not a particularly nasty one.

Hello, I'm trying to fix the same problem on someone's computer. The cd-rom dissappered when he tried to install an external cd-writer. I booted off of the XP installation CD, ran the setup, and chose to repair the installation. NOW, when it boots up it is trying to finish setting up. It looks for the xp cd-rom, but can't find the drive. It is driving me nuts. If someone can help, I would be very thankful.

Hello! I had too such problem, that all my CD rom drives suddenly dissappeared. The reason for this problem was the installation of iTunes from QuickTime (by the way, during the installation an error occured). Then I found this forum, I used suggested script and now all works (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs). So, if anybody has the same problem, just use this script, it works !!!

What happens if you don't have any Upper/Lower keys in the CLSID listed in the vbs file, but your cd burner drive still disappears? I have a dell precision 370 with two drives that are sony: 1. cd-rw/dvd-rom drive CRX320AE 2. dvd rw DRU-800A Drive 2 never disappears and it's the slave to drive 1. TIA, Allen

Hi all, Just wanted to let those in search of a little help from here that this script works beautifully! It took me a moment to realize that I needed to execute (paste the link...) http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs into MS internet explorer and NOT Firefox.... It seems to have been written for explorer in mind :) but hey- it worked great for me and needed just one reboot. I also was messing around with I-tunes and Quicktime last week but ended up tossing that package in the trash. I think there's a connection with that and this problem as well. Thanks guys for all the help :)

Hi, I agree with terri, does this link (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs) work in Windows 98. Also, what does it do? I'm concerned about screwing something else up. I'm having a similar problem in Windows 98SE. All of a sudden my DVD-ROM and CD-RW "disappeared". During the course of trying to find what happened and many re-boots I now have my DVD-ROM, but no CD-RW. When I booted in the safe mode I can see everything in my computer. Thanks, Carl

No, it does not work on Windows 98.

Windows drivers are layered. Requests are processed by each filter in turn. Filters are specified by the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values, which are specified for each device calll in the registry. If a driver mentioned in one of those values is not found, the driver chain will not be loaded. The script removes ALL filters for cdrom drives, which means that the CDROM driver will load again, but certain applications may not work until you reinstall them.

Just to add to the praise to Chris (july 2003) and his solution. After installing itunes the dvd/cdrw drive on my pb easy one laptop dissappeared, did a full restore which cured it only to have the same happen again when I installed itunes for the second time. Searched and found this thread and the vbs file sorted it in two seconds ( and a restart) thanks again to chris for his solution. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

I did not need to unplug the drives. I only had the upperfilters entry in my registry, I simply deleted the entry from my registry and reboot my computer. From reviewing the script, you should be able to safely doubleclick the script file, let it find and delete the entries for you. It will only delete then specific entries listed and nothing else. Do your drives work in DOS? (boot up with an XP install CD and see if it boots into the CD)

I've got double bad news. Not only does the itunes install disable the two cdrom drives, it doesn't complete the install. I've installed the same .exe file downloaded from Apple on three other machines with no problems. It get's to 'Publishing ...', then the window disappears and there is no evidence that an install ever took place, except there cdroms are toast.

On Wednesday February 2, I was trying to copy some data into one of my CD ROM drives using Nero and all of the sudden all my CD/DVD ROM drives disappeared form my Explorer list. I lost contact with 2 internal drives and one external drive. Although I will try the scrip that seems to work for everyone else, I would like to know what's causing this issue? Why can't Microsoft eliminate this in their XP Operating system?

I tried the scipt everyone else has had good luck with with no success. It did remove an upperFilters entry, but my DVD Rom And DVD/RW are still showing the yellow marks and no disks are recognized. I have consulted Microsoft Knowledge Base about this error code 39 and tried all of its suggestions as well as everything suggested here - no luck! I can either reinstall XP from scratch or replace the optical drives at this point unless someone has another suggestion to try. The error code says corrupted driver files, but I have replaced those to no avail either. This was the script I tried : http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

Hi to anyone that can help. I have a 2month old Compaq computer with burn problems in XP. Have removed filters, run script. Windows xppro sees CDDVD drive. In properties the record tab is set to enable. IMAPI CD burn is set to start. The drive will burn, but not from the windowXP programs. by this I mean Windows media player. It will play but when I try to burn I get "can't find the burner". In program MyDVD message the drives are disabled (when I check the record tab it is still on enabled) and the program will not open. However, if I go bacK to a file created in the program when I didn"t have a problem MyDVD will open and I can burn from there. Just working in a wordprocessor and windows asked what I want to do with a file, I select burn to DC drive it transfers the file, prompts with ready to burn click on balloon files waiting, Do that and try to burn and it says burner not found. I really hope someone can help I have tried for weeks and have gotten no where. Oh I did the restore to earlier date, still WMPwill not reconize the drive. Thanks for any help!!!!

I've had this problem for two months and this little prog FINALLY fixed it. Massive props to all those responsible for making such an insanely easy fix available. I'm somewhat savvy (A+, MCP), but have never had to deal with this! Just copy the link in the previous post into your browser's address bar, navigate to it and when the script is displayed, select Save Page As from your File Menu. Save it somewhere you can find it, then run it by going there and double-clicking it. I went the extra mile towards making sure by deleting the CD drive from Device Manager, but I'm not sure that's required. This WORKS and nothing else did. I'm going to take a class on registry editing right NOW. Awesome fix. Thanx again.

"Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning" Misfortune
Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 5:31 pm
Posted by WeAreZilla (1 messages posted)

If you get a BSOD after installing a Roxio Creator product on XP, these are the steps to get your system back. It includes the link above to get CD/DVD devices back. This program is supposedly a repackage of Easy CD Creator 6 (originally released 2003?), which has worked fine for me in the past. Unfortunately, now when I install this repackaged version it crashes my system on first reboot with a Blue Screen Of Death. (If you don't have your system set to actually read a BSOD, it will just flash the BSOD.) If this happens to you I've discovered how to fix it, but it's a little involved. The good news is that your system is not lost! 1. Restart your computer into "Safe Mode" (slowly tap F8 after pushing the power button), then when prompted, "Administrator". 2. Click Start, right-click My Computer, select Explore. 3. Navigate to C:/Windows/System32/Drivers 4. Rename "cdr4_xp.sys" to "cdr4_xp.old" (This is the root of your trouble, but you must follow the next steps to get your computer back.) 5. Navigate to C:/Program Files/Common Files/Roxio Shared 6. Right-click the Roxio Shared folder and select Delete. 7. Navigate to C:/Program Files/Roxio 8. Right-click the Roxio folder and select Delete. 9. Reboot now to your normal desktop. (Click Start, Turn Off Computer, Restart) You may get a minor error about a missing program. 10. Click Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs 11. Click on Easy CD & DVD Creator and select Remove. 12. At this point you may be missing your CD and/or DVD drives. You can check by double-clicking My Computer. If your CD/DVD drives are missing, you can get them back by copy-and-pasting the following link into Internet Explorer ONLY. (You will be challenged about running it and the publisher...ALLOW it to run) [I am asking you to run a script file, which is a BIG no-no on the internet. It's a matter of trust...but there are few options here. I had to trust, and run it too. It worked!] http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs Reboot once more, and that's it - back to normal - DON'T reinstall Easy CD & DVD Burning because you will have to through all of this again. Z

I've had this problem for many months. It started after installing a Windows update when I had Nero 6.3 installed. Unfortunately, I don't know what update it was nor exactly when it started. I uninstalled Nero and got my drive back. I later installed iTunes and the drives disappered again. The above mentioned script does work but it disables Nero, iTunes and Roxio as the fix. I am running Windows XP SP2 on a Toshiba 1955-s804 laptop. After running the script all drives come back but iTunes no longer works and must be reinstalled. When that is done the drives disappear again. This also happens when I install Nero Burning Rom 6.3 and I have heard that it is also the case with Roxio. This is not an iTunes, Nero or Roxio issue, this is a Windows issue. Anybody have a fix that will let iTunes install and not have the drives disappear?

You can create (and see what the file does) by creating a new txt file using notepad. Then paste the following (between the -----) into it: -------------------------------------------- Option Explicit

On Error Resume Next Dim WshShell, Message Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WshShell.RegDelete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilters" WshShell.RegDelete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\LowerFilters" WshShell.RegDelete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Cdr4_2K\" WshShell.RegDelete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Cdralw2k\" WshShell.RegDelete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Cdudf\" WshShell.RegDelete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\UdfReadr\" Set WshShell = Nothing Message = "Your CD/DVD-Rom drives should now appear in Windows Explorer." & vbCR Message = Message & "You may need to reboot your computer to see the change." MsgBox Message, 4096,"Finished!" -------------------------------------------- Then close and save the txt file. Then rename the file xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs Once that is doen, double click the file, should work.

CD drive went missing

Hi all! I have a similar problem here myself, after unplugging my DVD burner as suggested by a friend when trying to fix another computer problem, which is now fixed... My DVD drive (D:) went missing from the Windows Explorer! In the startup it would detect it and say something like ODDO: Pioneer DVD RW dvr 112D in green fonts, and if I insert a Windows CD in it the startup would detect the CD fine and all. But after logging into Windows XP, I couldn't even find the DVD device on the Device Manager... I tried to install the driver from their website but it would give me this message: /// ODD Firmware Update Utility Ver2.51C Available Target is not found So right now, I'm at loss at how to get this fixed. :( Please help! Much thanks for your time.

OMG. I am SO happy to have found this forum and the link to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs.

It was a miracle fix, and didn't even require a re-boot! My CD and DVD drives are back within seconds of the patch. Don't know what caused the disappearance (something with Nero) but am grateful to Doug Knox for this fix!

I'm in the middle of a project and couldn't afford to lose more time. Thanks to Google for helping me find this wonderful forum and Doug Knox!

Followup: all my CD rom drives suddenly dissappeared

Well, I take back my praise from the previous thread. On re-boot the drives are GONE and the patch does not work. So I have two drives (CD-Rom and DVD drive) and neither is recognized by the hard drive. They've worked just fine up until 2 days ago and then after some quirky Nero & Windows Media Player fiasco they both disappeared. Is it a virus, or what? There's no registry entry to fix as described by someone else above...??

My CD-ROM drives recently disappeared after installing some Roxio software. After doing some research, I found the patches posted and also tried deleting the upperfilters, etc. from the registry as recommended. Unfortunately, none of these attempts fixed the problem. I also checked the BIOS and it is not showing up there or in the device manager. Please help as this is extremely frustrating. Thanks!

I have the same problem with a Compaq presario 5000 I'm working on. Drives disappeared, returned after the registry fix, installed some software and disappeared again and stayed hidden all evening. This morning, hey presto! they have returned! I'm beginning to suspect system board battery. Any other ideas please?

I received a call about this issue, I remember doing the upper/lower filters fix by hand before. Sent the URL to that .VBS file to the friend and after rebooting, the drive showed right back up. Awesome fix for a stupid problem.
