Are they showing up in the BIOS setup screens? If not then it could be the cable. If they are then it could be time for a new CD-ROM. Are you sure the second one is working? Also if they show up is you PC keeping the correct time? Could be the CMOS Battery is dieing. Try auto detecting them in BIOS and see what they show.

Does the drive appear in "My Computer"?

If it does appear on "My Computer", if you insert a cd, does the LED light up? If it does light up, but can't read the CD, maybe you should clean the lens or, align the lens(buying a new one is a lot more practical than aligning)

It'd be a good idea to verify the data and power connections are firmly attached. If that's not it, the cdrom probably needs to be replaced.

When 98 reports that something is working properly that's not the result of a detailed diagnosis. It just knows the device is there and it's reading the firmware OK. It doesn't know if the motor works, the laser works, the lens is clean, etc.

My efforts to decipher your disjointed wording leave me with the conclusion that you put in a second cdrom and it didn't work. Is that correct?

If so boot with a 98 bootdisk and choose cdrom support. Pay attention to the last few lines that load prior to the final a:\> as that will indicate the cdrom drive letter. (Some bootdisks temporarily change that letter.)

Then put a known good data (not audio) cd in the cdrom. Let it spin up for a few seconds and then type dir x:\ and enter, where x: is the cdrom drive letter indicated when you booted up. It should give a directory listing of the root directory on the cd. You may need to hit R (for retry) a few times if it doesn't immediately read the disk.

If it reads the disk, the problem is most likely in windows. If it doesn't then most likely the disk or cdrom is bad, or the connections are bad.

Well, if the cable is new, and you tried another working drive, then I would suggest installing the Motherboard drivers and or making sure that the drive is a slave and not master when connected to the Master HD. If it is on it's own channel then make it master.
